Legislative Update and Events – ’22 Session Reconvened Today

The Legislature reconvened today, January 4. You can find the weekly schedule and ways to access the meetings on the Legislature’s webpage. As always, note that the schedule changes often.

Alliance staff is working with our partner organizations to monitor these legislative discussions and support advocacy throughout the session. Please let us know what we can do to help you stay involved in events at the State House.

  • Building Bright Futures: The State of Vermont’s Children and Families Briefing– 1/10

Join Building Bright Futures (BBF) on January 10 at 1:00 pm for a briefing on the state of Vermont’s young children and families. Included in the briefing will be highlights from this year's "State of Vermont's Children and Families" report, as well as a question-and-answer session.

  • Vermont Association for the Education of Young Children 50th Anniversary Kickoff – 1/19

VTAEYC's Board, members, and friends will host two 45-minute sessions on January19, at 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm, to kick off their 50th year. Connect with fellow early childhood educators, learn about new programs and resources, and get involved in shaping the future of early childhood education in Vermont.

  • Virtual Homelessness Awareness Day – 1/20

VAHC will host the Vermont Virtual Homelessness Awareness Day and Vigil on January 20 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Join homeless and formerly homeless Vermonters, service and shelter providers, and housing advocates from across the state as they reflect on what can be done in the coming year to end homelessness in Vermont.

The event will take place on Zoom and will be live streamed on Facebook and YouTube. For more information and if you are interested in sharing your experiences during the event, visit the VAHC website.

  • Farm to School Mutual Support Drop-in Conversation – 1/20

The Farm to School Network is hosting a monthly one-hour drop-in call that is open to anyone to discuss farm to school related successes, struggles, favorite projects, and tough problems. The first session will be held on January 20 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.

  • Let’s Grow Kids Child Care Policy Briefing – 1/27

Join LGK for their virtual 2022 Policy Priorities Briefing with CEO Aly Richards and LGK staff. Hear the details of LGK’s 2022 policy priorities and learn more about next steps and how to take action together.

First Alliance "Legislative Happy Hour" of the Session – 1/10

This winter, the Alliance will be hosting four virtual “Legislative Happy Hours” leading up to this year’s ECDL. Each session will focus on one or two issues from the Alliance’s 2022 Legislative Agenda. Joined by representatives from the lead organizations, participants will be able to ask direct questions and hear a brief legislative update regarding the issues. 

The first session will be held this upcoming Monday, January 10 from 3:30 to 4:15 pm. Hosted by David Martins from the Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition and Amy Rose from Voices for Vermont’s Children, this session is a great opportunity to learn more about Housing and Reach Up policy, get to know the advocates, and receive an update on where their bills stand in the Legislature.

Alliance Monthly Equity Discussion – 1/21  

Join a group of peers and colleagues from the early childhood community to engage in sustained learning about anti-racism, equity, and inclusion. The Alliance hosts a monthly, salon-style Equity Discussion Group via Zoom, and the next session is coming up on Friday, January 21 at 1:00 pm.

“Teaching Black History Month All Year Round” will be facilitated by Chris Dodge, a veteran Vermont educator and school principal at Swanton Elementary School. Chris is currently finishing his certificate of advanced graduate study in school law at the University of Connecticut, where much of his learning has focused on equity, social and restorative justice, and anti-racism.

The Vermont Early Childhood Advocacy Alliance is a statewide coalition formed in 2000 of early childhood professionals, parents, organizations, businesses, and strategic partners committed to improving public policies that impact young children between birth and age eight in the areas of health, safety, food security, economic security, and early care and education.

The Alliance crafts an annual Legislative Agenda in partnership with early childhood organizations, provides year-round advocacy support, and facilitates meaningful interactions with policymakers at key times during the decision making process.
