’23 Legislative Session ends, but Veto Session coming

The ’23 legislative session has come to a close – sort of. While the Legislature wrapped up most of their work Friday evening, the Governor is expected to veto several key bills, including potentially the FY24 budget. As a result, the Legislature is planning to return June 20-22 for a veto session to consider veto overrides and other unfinished legislative business.

While the final results of the legislative year won’t be known until after the veto session, Alliance staff is working with the lead organizations on our ’23 Legislative Agenda issues on a summary of the outcomes of the session. Look for that summary in a newsletter edition coming out next week.

Alliance Equity Discussion - Considering Equity and Inclusion in your Organizational Holiday/Leave Policy - 5/26

Join a group of peers and colleagues from the early childhood community to engage in sustained learning about anti-racism, equity, and inclusion. The Alliance hosts a monthly, salon-style Equity Discussion Group via Zoom, and the next session is coming up on Friday, May 26, at 1:00 pm.

Inspired by the state and federal designation of the Juneteenth holiday, this session will be a discussion about how to develop an organizational staff holiday and leave policy that is equitable and inclusive.

To start our discussion, Katherine Nelson, Director of Finance and Administration at the Vermont Community Loan Fund (VCLF), will present the newly revised policy that the Alliance’s parent organization put into place this year.

BBF Family Needs Assessment Briefing – 5/17

Building Bright Futures (BBF) is hosting a virtual briefing on the recently released report on the 2022 Vermont Early Childhood Family Needs Assessment on Wednesday, May 17, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

This assessment looked at the state’s services and supports for families with children from the prenatal period to age eight. The report shows how Vermont’s early childhood system is working well for families and how the state could do better. It also highlights four considerations for policy.

The briefing will feature a panel of four Vermont state agency and private partners who will discuss these policy considerations in greater depth and answer questions from participants.

For more information and to register for the briefing, visit the BBF website.

The Vermont Early Childhood Advocacy Alliance is a statewide coalition formed in 2000 of early childhood professionals, parents, organizations, businesses, and strategic partners committed to improving public policies that impact young children between birth and age eight in the areas of health, safety, food security, economic security, and early care and education.

The Alliance crafts an annual Legislative Agenda in partnership with early childhood organizations, provides year-round advocacy support, and facilitates meaningful interactions with policymakers at key times during the decision making process.
