Meet the Lead Organizations

Each issue on the Alliance’s annual Legislative Agenda has one or more identified Lead Organizations. A lead organization performs several tasks, including researching and writing proposals for issues to be included on the Legislative Agenda, serving as a policy expert on the issue, and working with Alliance staff to secure testimony for committees and engaging legislators.

Stay tuned for in-depth introductions to several Alliance Lead Organizations, starting this week with Hunger Free Vermont!

Hunger Free Vermont

Hunger Free Vermont’s mission is to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters. Hunger Free Vermont develops carefully integrated strategic initiatives designed to provide low income Vermonters with the most consistent and readily available opportunities to eat the healthy food they require to thrive. They help community organizations, schools, and childcare providers understand and make the most effective use of the federal nutrition programs that feed children through childcare, school, afterschool, and summer meal programs; and families and adults through 3SquaresVT.

Hunger Free Vermont also serves as an important source of education and advocacy about the critical importance of good nutrition in developing and maintaining a healthy and active life, and the necessity of tackling infrastructure barriers at the local, state, regional, and national level that prevent Vermonters from accessing enough healthy food.

Hunger Free Vermont was one of the Lead Organizations working on two issues from the Alliance’s 2020 Legislative Agenda – Universal School Meals and Farm to School and Early Childhood.

The Alliance supports Hunger Free Vermont’s efforts to ensure that every child can eat at school every day, regardless of their caregiver’s ability to pay, by requiring all public schools in Vermont to provide universal school meals by 2025.

Hunger Free Vermont – with VT FEED and the VT Farm to School Network – also advocated to increase annual funding for the state’s Farm to School program, to ensure early childhood settings serving children ages birth through grade 3 can access program funding for gardening and farm visits, food procurement planning, professional development, and infrastructure and equipment.

This summer, Hunger Free Vermont is working to ensure meal access for families with children (see flyer here). To learn more about Hunger Free Vermont and their programs, visit their website.

The Vermont Early Childhood Advocacy Alliance is a statewide coalition formed in 2000 of early childhood professionals, parents, organizations, businesses, and strategic partners committed to improving public policies that impact young children between birth and age eight in the areas of health, safety, food security, economic security, and early care and education.

The Alliance crafts an annual Legislative Agenda in partnership with early childhood organizations, provides year-round advocacy support, and facilitates meaningful interactions with policymakers at key times during the decision making process.
